Surface Pattern Design & Licensing FAQ

What is art licensing?

Art licensing allows you to “rent” or use one of my designs to create your own products. I retain the copyright, but you’re granted usage rights for a specified time
period under the terms we agree upon.

What’s the difference between non-exclusive and exclusive licenses?

  • Non-Exclusive License: You can use the design, but I may license it to other clients as well.
  • Exclusive License: You get sole usage rights for the agreed term — meaning I won’t license the same design to anyone else during that time.

How long is my license valid for?

Your license is valid for 12 months from the date the final files are delivered. After that, you’re welcome to renew it. If you've arranged a different timeframe (such as 2 years or perpetual use), that will be outlined in your agreement.

What happens when my license expires?

Once your license period ends, you’ll have the option to renew or extend it. If you decide not to renew, you’ll need to stop using the design on any new products.

Can I request custom designs or changes to existing patterns?

Yes, absolutely! Whether you're after a bespoke pattern or want to tweak an existing one, please reach out and we can chat through the details.

What file formats will I receive?

Patterns are typically delivered as high-resolution JPEGs. If you need another format — like PNG, TIFF, or layered PSD files — just let me know when you contact me.

Are there any restrictions on how I can use the patterns?

Licensed designs can be used across a wide range of products - including packaging, textiles, stationery, and more - as outlined in the license agreement. However, reselling or redistributing the artwork itself (such as offering it as a
download or clipart) is strictly prohibited. If you’re unsure about a specific
use, just ask! →

How do I purchase a license?

Browse the pattern library, choose your design, and get in contact to complete the license agreement and payment. Once everything is finalised, I’ll send you the
high-resolution files so you can get started. Read about the process in detail here.

How long will it take to receive my files?

For ready-to-license patterns, you’ll typically receive your files within 2–3
business days once your agreement
is confirmed. For custom work, timelines vary depending on the scope — I’ll
confirm an estimated delivery date before we begin.

Can I preview a pattern before purchasing?

Absolutely - each listing includes watermarked previews to help you visualise the design. If you'd like to see additional mockups or discuss colour variations, just get in touch.

Who owns the copyright to the design?

I retain full copyright and ownership of all designs, including custom patterns, unless otherwise agreed in writing. When you license a design, you're purchasing the rights to use it under the terms of the license — not the copyright itself. This means you can use the design for your agreed purpose, but you can’t claim it as your own, resell it, or redistribute it as a
standalone artwork.
