Behind the work
I'm Laura Hamzic, a Brisbane-based artist and surface pattern designer inspired by Australian nostalgia, meaningful places and the everyday moments we never want to forget.
I grew up on a farm in the Darling Downs, Queensland, surrounded by wide open paddocks, gum trees and the rhythms of country life. Those early memories continue to shape my work today, influencing everything from my paintings to my surface pattern designs.
Before becoming an artist, I spent almost a decade working in publishing and graphic design. During maternity leave, I rediscovered my love of painting and what began as a creative outlet quickly grew into something much bigger.
These days, you'll often find me painting in the early hours of the morning, at the kitchen table, or squeezed into whatever corner of the house I can claim as a studio for the day.
While I began primarily as a watercolour artist, I've recently found myself drawn to gouache and its rich, painterly qualities. My work continues to evolve, but the heart behind it remains the same: creating artwork that feels personal, meaningful and deeply connected to memory.
I'm endlessly inspired by Australian life. Vintage tea towels, old enamel mugs, family farms, country kitchens, native flora, weathered buildings and treasured heirlooms all find their way into my work. I'm fascinated by the ordinary details that quietly become part of our story and the objects, places and traditions that connect us to home.
Today, I create custom paintings, fine art prints and surface pattern designs that celebrate those stories. Whether it's a family home, a meaningful bouquet, a favourite place or an everyday moment, my goal is to create artwork that feels nostalgic, heartfelt and worth holding onto.
Thank you for being here.
Cheers,
Laura x
