How I Fell in Love with Surface Pattern Design

Laura Hamzic's Surface Pattern Design - Jacaranda Path

I want to share a little about how I found my way into surface pattern design — a creative world I honestly hadn’t heard of before discovering Cass Deller’s Surface Pattern Design course.

For a long time, my art was all about standalone paintings. I’d spend hours carefully planning, pre-sketching, and making precise (a little cookie-cutter tbh) artwork. It was rewarding but also felt a bit restrictive. I knew I wanted to experiment more, but I wasn’t sure how or where to start.

Then Cass’s course kept appearing in my feeds and emails, but I wasn’t quite ready to invest in myself yet. The idea of diving into something new felt a little scary.

The day I finally signed up was just a week before the live round opened — perfect timing, right?

From the moment I saw the transformation from painting, to pattern, to product on Cass’s website, something clicked. It was like a whole new way to pour my creativity into something fresh and exciting. Suddenly, I felt permission to make loose, playful designs without worrying if they were “perfect.”

Cass Deller Painting to Pattern to ProductSince starting the course, I’ve been creating with whatever I have on hand, with no fear or second-guessing — just making and seeing where it takes me. That freedom to play has been such a refreshing change and really reignited my love for creating.

(Haven’t come across Cass before? You’ll definitely want to check out what she’s up to!)

Then I Took a Closer Look at the Course

I was amazed by how much was included.

I decided to invest in myself (big thanks to my hubby for encouraging me to take the plunge). The course covers so much — mindset, licensing your work, pattern making, industry know-how, and more. What I appreciated most was how easy everything was to follow: videos, step-by-step guides, group calls, worksheets — all thoughtfully put together.

One of the highlights was the pattern review at the end, where we got really helpful feedback to improve our designs.

It was also lovely to see everyone’s progress and celebrate those wins together.

And let’s not forget the guest speakers — a lineup of talented experts who shared such valuable insights and inspiring stories

If you’re considering a pattern course to build your skills and learn more about the industry, this one is worth checking out. You can see the full details and inclusions here:

What’s Next?

That’s where I’m at with surface pattern design so far, and I’m really excited about where this creative path will take me next. If you’re curious or thinking about trying it yourself, I hope this gives you a little insight into what it’s like.

P.S. If you’re just starting out, Cass also has a Beginner Photoshop & Illustrator course that’s a fantastic intro for creatives. It’s super easy to follow and perfect if you’re just getting your head around the basics.
